Managing jealousy in open relationships
Kathy Labriola, a relationship counsellor who has extensive experience working with singles, couples and groups in polygamous and open relationships, offered the following tips for managing your jealousy triggers to www.twodaymag.com:
• If you’re most shaken up by fears of abandonment, it’s time to work on your own sense of security and confidence, as well as ask your partner for reassurance and support to demonstrate his commitment to your relationship.
* If you’re most concerned about the “public relations” aspect (feeling humiliated by having other people knowing your partner has another lover), you can either ask your partner to be more discreet or learn to be less worried about what others think of you and your partner.
• If competitiveness or envy of the outside partner is a primary jealousy trigger for you, it’s important for you to boost your self-esteem through counselling, affirmations or activities that make you feel good about yourself.
“In essence, the best way to deal with feelings of jealousy within your relationship is to identify what your triggers are and work towards managing them through self-esteem building, open communication with your partner, and support from one another,” says Labriola.
