College Campus, a brand of The Independent Institute of Education, and the American Public University (APU) will partner to offer the Short e-Learning Programme in Leadership.
The programme is designed for managers, entrepreneurs and upwardly mobile employees looking to improve their leadership skills. Successful enrolment and completion of the course will guarantee students credits towards a degree from APU.
MD of College Campus Genevieve Allen chats to us about this exciting development.
What modules/subjects will the Short e-Learning Programme in Leadership cover?
The course covers the following eight aspects of a leader as a Visionary, Problem Solver, Team Builder, Manager, Communicator & Power Distributor, Liaison, Planner as well as Yourself Foundations.
What is the time span of the course? Is there a stipulated time period or can students go through the work at their own pace?
The course is eight weeks with set start and finish times. However, students can do their course work at any time (during the day, evenings or weekends) as they don’t need to “attend” at a specific time. However, there are deadlines for each submission in order to complete the course.
What skills set will students have acquired on completion of the course work?
On successful completion of the course a student will be able to:
- Identify and analyse effective leadership including the awareness and understanding of a leader’s role.
- Evaluate key leadership traits and strategies at all levels of an organisation.
- Analyse the methods for establishing and reaching personal and professional goals.
- Analyse organisational climate in work situations and apply appropriate motivation strategies to improve leadership skills at all levels.
- Examine and evaluate the importance of charisma in leadership styles.
- Develop an understanding of leadership skills that relate to team building.
- Identify the skills needed that leaders need as a planner.
- Evaluate the leader's abilities to work as a liaison.
Will students receive a certificate on completion?
Yes, from the American Public University. Students will also receive credit towards an American Public University Degree.
How does the course rate on the SA National Qualifications Framework?
The National Qualifications Framework (NQF) specifically pertains to the South African education environment, therefore this course does not fit into the framework. The American Public University, however, is formally recognised by the US Department of Education (similar to SA’s Department of Education) as well as by the Higher Learning Commission (similar to SA’s Council for Higher Education). College Campus is registered by the South African Department of Higher Education to offer short learning programmes and students are assured of quality educational programmes.
Are the any prerequisites for entry into the programme?
Yes, a matric is required. However, in certain instances students will be exempt due to their age and work experience.
Will students be assessed and what form will this assessment take?
Yes, continuous assessment will take place during the course including forums – students must participate in the "classroom" by answering questions and debating aspects among classmates and their lecturer. They also have to submit assignments, essays and sit for the mid-term and final exams.
What is the cost of the programme?
R7 000 once-off payment or terms. The fee includes downloadable course material. Should you wish to use the College Campus computer and Internet facilities, students are welcome to use College Campus’ computer and Internet facilities for an additional R1 000 (terms are also available).
Given that Ivy League Colleges like Harvard and MIT are already offering online courses, why should a student choose College Campus and APU instead?
The content has been localised for the South African market. The Short Learning Programme in Leadership bears credits towards an APU degree.
