"A surreal experience" is how Pheto describes her cameo on one of the world's most widely watched shows. At an exclusive screening of Pheto's debut on The Bold and the Beautiful, Pheto explained that she had thoroughly enjoyed meeting soap stars Katherine Kelly Lang (Brooke), Ronn Moss (Ridge) and Hunter Tylo (Taylor).
Selected guests, media and celebrities were privy to seeing footage of Pheto's appearance. As of today, Pheto will play Dr Malaika Maponya. Of her debut, Pheto said it had been an amazing journey and she was appreciative of the opportunity SABC1 had afforded her.
"When SABC1 called me to tell me they wanted to communicate about a possible role in The Bold and the Beautiful, I thought they were joking and making a fool out of me. I then went for a meeting and thought their offer through. It took time and was not an overnight decision," Pheto says.
On what she had taken from the experience, Pheto said it had been a special but challenging time. "I wanted it to be something that I could be proud of and I am thankful to the SABC that they believed in my talent. I will continue to learn and grow and make people proud. I am going to go home to watch the show with my parents to thank and share this special moment with them," she added.
Phuti Moloto, SABC1 drama portfolio manager, said Pheto's cameo was in line with the local broadcaster's plans on establishing an international presence and producing relevant content. "SABC1 is synonymous with producing local content and since The Bold and the Beautiful was celebrating 25 years on our schedule, it was important for us to build and grow the relationship we had with it. We ran the idea with The Bold and the Beautiful team and asked them to incorporate a South African character. Terry fit the brand prefectly because she was the face of L'Oreal and has an Oscar to her name.
"This is not the end of Terry's association with The Bold and the Beautiful. We are in talks to have a location shoot with the show's cast here next year and Terry's character will play a big part in that."
Brad Bell, The Bold and the Beautiful's executive director, said he was aware of Pheto's history and was impressed by her performance. "She is playing a character that can go in any direction. She has done a great job," he said.
Since her debut in the Oscar awardwinning film Tsotsi, Pheto has gone onto making her mark in the entertainment industry.
When asked about her experience on the soap opera she lights up as she recalls her time on set. “It was such an unforgettable experience. I grew up watching Brooke on TV and now I was on set with her."
Pheto says the main advice she received from the other actors was to keep up as they work really fast. Only once she started working on set did she realise what they meant. "We worked at an extremely fast pace. It was like once we shot a scene there was no going back.”
Women in the entertainment industry who Pheto admires include Khanyi Dhlomo and Carol Bouwer. “They were able to take all their experience in the industry and turn it into a business.” Pheto has started her own production company, Leading Lady Productions, but her current schedule hasn’t given her much time to focus on her company.
Although Pheto enjoys her success and the stardom that comes with it, she doesn't want the invasive celebrity status that comes behind it. “There is no rule about how to conduct yourself in the industry. I’ve just chosen not to entertain people with my personal life. My job is to be an actress, that’s how I pay the bills.”
Catch Pheto tonight in the Bold & The Beautiful at 18:00 on SABC 1.
