Prior to the Rio Olympic Games, Wayde van Niekerk (24) was announced as an Audi Sport Ambassador and given an Audi RS3 Sportback as his official vehicle.
But after his fantastic turn at the Olympics – where he smashed a 17-year-old world record set by Michael Johnson in 1999 with an outstanding performance in the 400m sprint with a time of 43.03 seconds – Audi decided to hand him an R8 as his sponsored vehicle.
Wayde was surprised with the vehicle this morning at OR Tambo International Airport when he returned to South Africa.
“We thought there was no better way to welcome him home than to surprise him with the all new Audi R8 as his new vehicle following his stellar performance at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. We look forward to being a long-term partner to him as his bright future progresses and supporting him as he continues to proudly represent South Africa both on and off the athletics track,” said Paul Sansom, Head of Audi South Africa.
The Audi R8 V10 Plus that Wayde will be driving, is the most powerful and fastest production Audi ever built. With 449 kW of power and going from 0 to 100 in just 3.2 seconds, driver skill and competence is crucial. Audi announced that Wayde will be treated to an exclusive driver training session with a qualified Audi Sport Specialist instructor to ensure that he is fully equipped to safely drive the vehicle.
