It was wedding bells for Mbete on her 67th birthday.

Dispatch Live reports that this is the speaker’s second marriage. She was married to poet and activist Keorapetse Kgositsile for 14 years before their divorce in 1992.

The wedding took place at Mbete’s father’s home in Mqanduli, Eastern Cape.

”She looked beautiful in a formal suit,” said her brother, Mphakama Mbete.

According to Sowetan Live, her brother confirmed that lobola had been paid the day before the wedding but didn’t reveal any details.

“Yes, lobola was paid, but that is a family affair,” he said.

According to reports, 11 cows arrived at the family home on Friday while the groom witnessed the slaughtering of an ox as a sign of being welcomed by the Mbete family.

On Saturday, The Daily Dispatch tweeted photos of the auspicious occasion, including one of the happy couple standing at the altar.

Mbete experienced a serious health scare in 2014 after an intense election campaign in May 2014.

She had to be transferred from 2 Military Hospital to 1 Military Hospital by military plane and was accompanied by two doctors who apparently considered taking a defibrillator – a machine used to treat life-threatening heart conditions – on the plane.
