How would you describe your style?
My personal style is elegant, creative, bold and confident.
Where did you get your sense of style?
I grew up in a family that loved to dress up. My mother and her siblings (sisters and brothers) loved clothes and I believe that they managed to influence my style significantly. Watching all the different styles they had and the different fashion sense they displayed, I managed to develop my own style from a combination of factors inspired by them – obviously with a touch of my own personal flair.
Who are your style icons?
Style icons are Tamu McPherson, Solange Knowles, Jenna Lyons and Miroslava Duma.
What was one of your biggest fashion splurges?
Hmmm… Jekyll and Hide luggage bag. I love travelling so I had to start investing in decent luggage bags.
Favourite thing in your closet?
Yikes! I have so many. I’m currently in love with off-shoulder clothing items. So right now my best would have to be my off-shoulder, baby blue, striped, knee-length dress that has a matching choker.
Accessory you can’t live without?
Lipstick counts as an accessory right?
Best recent fashion find?
Off-shoulder striped choker top. I love it!
What’s more important, a great bag or a great pair of shoes?
Tough one, but I will go with a great pair of shoes.
Top five clothing items every woman should invest in?
1. A good quality crisp white shirt.
2. A great one-piece swimsuit.
3. A pair of elegant black leather flat shoes.
4. A black winter coat.
5. A panama hat.
What do you say to those who believe that labels define your level of style?
That is restrictive. We are all beings full of substance and much to give to the world. Let your style be defined from within and not determined by outside factors. It’s alright to be inspired by certain designers, but stay true to who you are. Allow your essence to flourish.
Finish these sentences:
Confidence comes from… a deep sense of self-love and knowing who you are.
Beauty looks like… vulnerability, empathy and kindness.
Style to me is… the authentic expression of my being both in fashion and leadership. No matter how much I would love to have Obama leadership style or Jenna Lyons fashion style, I will never get it to be exact. It’s their expression of who they are. I can however be inspired and influenced by it in determining my own style. Style is linked to the core of self and therefore remains constant whilst experimenting with the different types of fashion seasons throughout time.
