Instastyle crush: Nomalanga Shozi

Rhythm City actress and fashionista Nomalanga Shozi's style is chic and fierce. She shares her style secrets with us

Nomalanga is steadily making her mark in the entertainment industry. Originally from the KwaZulu-Natal south coast city of Port Shepstone, the 22-year-old All Access presenter and Gagasi FM radio personality says she has a love for the fashion vanguard and she maintains a chic and cool style.

My style is very much street style. It’s retro, sometimes sexy and pretty, but most of the time it’s chic. It’s unique to me, I always dress for me.

I love my personal style. I always try to make [sure] authenticity, originality and comfortability are prevalent in my style.

The one accessory I can’t live without is my hair, that’s my signature look. I got the wig from O’Naturals wigs and I love it! I feel like it’s an extension of my character and personality; people can tell a lot about me from the way I choose to wear my hair.

My hair is a reference point for me. Sometimes when I see an outfit I think of how it would be enhanced by my hair. I generally love afros – in all sizes, shapes and form – I don’t find [them] limiting at all.

I draw inspiration from the internet. I love it because it allows us to think for ourselves. There is a variety of blogs, sites and celebrities you can draw inspiration from. I also love Solange, Erykah Badu and Oroma Elewa. I draw inspiration from brands like Balmain, Marc Jacobs – I like how they play around with textures and fabrics.

Before buying an item, I access its versatility. The item has to be versatile because I don’t buy a lot. I can buy an expensive pair of shoes because I can do a lot with it. The price also plays a factor in whether I buy [an item] or not. Lastly, does the item resonate with me? I always make sure the clothes I buy are a reflection of me.

Three items every woman should have are:

  • A crisp white shirt
  • A good pair of jeans – you can do so much with jeans
  • A plain white T-shirt
