Putting on a few kilos is almost guaranteed during the festive season. It’s a time for celebrating togetherness and, of course, indulging. Before going on, I must confess: I am a foodie. (Just thought I’d get that out of the way.)
Here are a few tips to help you keep your weight in check during the festive season:
- Don’t stop exercising
So you can’t attend your favourite aerobics class or find time for the treadmill? Even 15 minutes of skipping, walking or jogging will help you stay fit. Try to be active daily because one exercise session unfortunately won’t cancel all the treats you indulge in.
- Avoid the ‘morning after’ food
No matter how tempting it can be, avoid having last night’s leftovers in the morning. Rather opt for a wholesome breakfast which will provide you with important nutrients. Remind yourself there will plenty of opportunities to indulge. Keep your breakfast healthy and light – your body will thank you for this.
Tip: If you plan to drink alcohol, have water between each drink.

- Try to eat in moderation
You’re better off eating in moderation rather than stuffing your face with everything that’s on the menu. Don’t “save your appetite” for a big meal because by the time you do eat, you’ll want everything and then become uncomfortably full.

- Be picky
We often underestimate how much we consume when we’re given a variety of foods. It is therefore advisable to have a look at everything that’s on the menu so that you know exactly what you’re choosing from, then pick the foods you really want and avoid eating the ones you could do without.
Happy holidays to you and yours!
