While the saying goes “the grass is greener on the other side”, this isn’t always the case when it comes to changing jobs. It’s really important to ensure that the challenges you are moving away from aren’t waiting for you in your new job.
Business and inspirational speaker Buhle Dlamini says changing jobs is a life-altering decision that should be taken with heed. It’s important to do your homework and, if possible, talk to current employees of the company you are considering joining.”
Reasons to consider leaving your job:
- You are underappreciated: Don’t allow yourself to be undervalued. If you are being overworked or underpaid, you should consider moving to a company that will appreciate you.
- You are no longer growing: If you are not learning anything new or are not moving closer towards your long-term career goals, it’s time to consider a change.
- You aren’t being treated fairly: If you are being abused, exploited or mistreated, it’s definitely time to move on.
- Your job is in jeopardy: When companies struggle financially some wait for the right opportunity to make jobs redundant. If you find yourself in this situation you should consider up-skilling and moving to a new role or looking for a new job.
- The company is in trouble: If the company is financially unstable due to inadequate planning or bad strategy, consider how this could impact you in the long run.
What should you consider before changing jobs?
Pay – Will you be paid more than in your previous job? This is an important question as moving from one job should propel you forward and this should reflect in your pay.
Relevance to your skills and passion – Many people make the mistake of going for a job that pays more but they really have no interest in. You will grow to resent your job if you don’t enjoy the work.
Culture – The culture of the company you are joining becomes much like the water in the fish tank for the fish. It’s important to be happy with what the company stands for and how it operates.
Opportunities for growth – When you start a new job consider if it offers you opportunities to grow and climb the ladder within the company. A new job should help you get closer to achieving your short- and long-term career goals.
Freedom and flexibility – Determine how a new job would impact your personal life. How much time will you have your friends, family and personal interests?
Dlamini says you will spend a large part of your life working so ensure that you move to a company and position that you will be happy in. “Before changing jobs, consider how this move fits into your career plan. List specific goals and desires then set about identifying companies you would like to work for.
“When you change jobs do not burn bridges as past employers may affect you moving forward. Lastly, always go into a job with the aim of staying there as long as possible and plan to grow with the company,” he concludes.
