Emfuleni mayor blows R1,7m on takeaways and hotels

Emfuleni Mayor Simon Mofokeng has landed himself in hot water, after it emerged that he splurged a whopping R1,7 million on hotels and takeaways

Mofokeng has been slammed for racking up a bill of R629 000 at KFC and Nando’s outlets between November 2015 and April this year.

A further R1,1 million was spent on stays at luxury hotels from 2011-2015, while he was mayor of Sedibeng District Municipality.

The mind-blowing figures were revealed by Gauteng Co-operative Governance MEC Paul Mashatile in reply to questions in the legislature.

Questions have also been raised over irregular fuel claims he submitted for his personal car, as well as charges for car hire services, despite the fact that he had an official mayoral car at his disposal.

DA Gauteng constituency head in Emfuleni North Kingsol Chabalala has condemned Mofokeng’s excessive spending, calling it shameful.

He wants Mofokeng to be sacked.

“It is shameful that Mofokeng, a senior ANC leader, continues to dine in the lap of luxury when so many in the municipality go hungry,” he said in a statement.

“Mayor Mofokeng’s monthly spending habits fly in the face of Finance MEC Barbara Creecy’s statements on practicing austerity and cutting back on luxury hotel stays and fast food.”

In an interview with News24, the mayor’s spokesperson Lebo Mofokeng defended the expenditure, saying that it must be noted that the total amount was spent over a period of five years.

She added that people should bear in mind that expenditure by executive offices also extends to entertainment, stakeholder and investor engagements and business meetings.

“Since his deployment to the municipality, the institution has obtained unqualified audit opinions, with fewer matters of emphasis from the Auditor-General and it is also worth noting the three clean audits the Sedibeng District Municipality attained during his term as the mayor,” she was quoted saying.

Mofokeng has accused Chabalala of running a smear campaign against him.
