• Use hair products with caffeine

Products which contain caffeine penetrate your hair follicles and stimulate growth. “Caffeine limits the amount of hair we shed,” says Khathwane.

Caffeine is also effective in stimulating your follicles by improving structure and growth, which makes it great for combatting hair loss as well.

  • Stretch your relaxer time

A great way to thicken relaxed hair is to stretch the time between relaxer applications. Khathwane explains that this means that instead of relaxing your hair every six weeks as you normally would, you do so after eight, 10, 12 or even 18 weeks.

Hair tends to become thinner over time when you relax previously treated hair. When you delay new treatments, there is a distinct line between the regrowth and the previously relaxed hair, making it easier to apply the relaxer cream.

Tip: Avoid applying relaxer on the hairline. This hair is already fine and will often blend well with the relaxed hair. It’ll also ensure that the relaxer doesn’t thin your hairline. It is very difficult to apply relaxer only to new growth.

  • Utilise braid/twists outs

Khathwane says even though her hair is thin, she styles it in such a way that it has a thicker feel. The perfect twist/braid-out thrives on moisture and a good hold. It’s vital that you apply a twist-defining cream. This is the most important step, because it ensures defined curls.

  • Deep conditioning

Whether your hair is relaxed or natural, deep conditioning should be an integral part of your haircare regime, says Khathwane. You should deep-condition your hair twice a month to keep it healthy.

  • Castor oil

Castor oil draws moisture to the hair, giving it a fuller appearance. According to The Health Site,“castor oil contains ricinoleic acid and omega-6 essential fatty acids, which accelerate blood circulation to the scalp, hence increasing hair growth. It works on nourishing the scalp and strengthening the roots with the help of essential nutrients.”

A great product to try is Sunny Isle Jamaican Black Castor Oil, available from Ruuto’s Hair, R280.

This oil contains crushed castor bean seeds, which effectively thicken hair and promote healthy growth. It also contains omega-6 and -9 fatty acids, which enhance the thickness and quality of hair.
