EFF national spokesperson Mbuyiseni Ndlozi’s achievement shines a light on EFF leaders’ educational achievements.

Ndlozi told Sowetan that he has set his sights on turning his recently completed PhD in politics thesis into a readable and accessible book. “I will begin a conversation with publishers after meeting my supervisor,” he was quoted as saying.

He told the publication that he would focus on publishing his thesis and added that he did not know when the book would be published.

In an interview with News24 on Friday, Ndlozi said that his mother wept after he received a letter from Wits University stating that he’d been awarded a PhD in political studies.

“After I found out this afternoon, I called my mother first of all… she couldn’t say two sentences and just wept over the phone,” he told News24.

He said it felt surreal, and that he was humbled and grateful for all the support that he received from his brothers, sisters and grandmother.

His thesis focused on the psychological shift in youth in the Vaal Triangle during the 1970s and 1980s. The area includes Sharpeville, Boipatong, Bophelong, Evaton, Orange Farm, Heidelberg, Zamdela and Potchefstroom.

Ndlozi’s accomplishment follows the graduation of the party’s leader Julius Malema, who obtained a BA degree in political leadership and citizenship at Unisa last year. Malema is reportedly completing his BA honours in philosophy through the same institution.

The party’s Deputy President and Chief Whip Floyd Shivambu completed his Master’s degree in political studies in December 2014. EFF Secretary-General Godrich Gardee is studying law through Unisa. Gardee has a higher national diploma in accounting and auditing.

The EFF said in a statement issued by Malema, that it was proud of Ndlozi’s achievement. “The EFF is proud of his achievements and cherish the discipline, dedication, focus and passion through which he mastered political activism and doctoral studies,” read the statement.
