Many young adults in their 20s spend their free time with friends heading to parties, clubs, or relaxing at home. But not Tiana Jansen, an accounting trainee from Cape Town who has been chosen as the first winner in the Airbnb Host-a-Hero campaign.

Tiana, 23, works as the director of music at the Elsies River Music Development Group. She spends much of her free time with the group, which comprises children and adults from the community.

The group helps develop a love of music by teaching musical skills to the community,  which is plagued by gangsterism and other crimes

Tiana has been involved with the group since inception in 2014, when her father and uncle recognised the need for a positive recreational activity in the area.

Talitha Dias, a member of the music group, says having Tiana on board is a privilege. “She is the most committed young person, who is completely committed to this initiative,” Dias says. “It’s very seldom you find a 23-year-old, willing to sacrifice every Saturday and Sunday afternoon of their time.”

Group principal, Bevil Jansen says Tiana encourages everyone to always do their best. “Her help and input in things we do or want to do, is always receptive. She takes great initiative and we certainly could not have asked for a better music director.”

Achievements

So far, one of the highlights has been receiving distinctions across the board when music students wrote the University of South Africa’s (Unisa) grade one theory examination.

Many of the children involved in the group have taken music as a school subject, or have chosen to study a music-related course at university.

The music group hosts a big show at the end of every year so they are able to showcase their talents and what they have learnt throughout the year.

Tiana’s work is a demonstration of how people can use their passion for the betterment of their community.

She is looking forward to an exciting beach getaway with her mother and sister, who have both been supportive of her journey.

Despite never having booked accommodation using Airbnb before, she easily set up an account and browsed through the myriad of options available. This increased her excitement because she saw there are different types of homes available and she could choose to stay in an entire place or with a host who, as a local, would be able to give her some tips about what to see and do in the neighbourhood and other Airbnb Experiences in the area.
