Mapitso Thaisi – making swimwear that reflects Basotho culture

Mixing her love for her culture and fashion, Mapitso Thaisi has stitched a name for herself as the brains behind Shweshwekini.

With a degree from the University of Cape Town in Human Rights Law and a background in occupational therapy, no one would have pegged Thaisi to become a fashion designer.

However, its this versatility that fostered her to start a successful Shweshwekini line – a swimwear and active wear range made from traditional cloth called shweshwe.

It’s been a year since the launch and the unique business idea is still going strong, and on a personal front, she’s added a post-graduate degree into the mix.

Here’s a gallery of her beautiful African-inspired designs.
