Earlier this year at Design Indaba, the Tutu 2.0 Pendant Light, by product designer, Thabisa Mjo was officially named the Most Beautiful Object in South Africa!
Drawing from both Western and African fashion styles, the lamp’s crowning moment is a testament to Mjo’s design aesthetic. It’s one she’s been discovering and honing for years.
After graduating in Production Design from film school, she enrolled in a year-long Interior Decorating and Architectural Drawing course. These qualifications paired with her innate talent equipped her to design the TV studios of a leading television production company and to style product launch events for brands such as Estee Lauder and Veuve Clicquot.
Then, in September 2016 she launched her first lighting collection called, Pieces of Me. It won “Best emerging talent” award and “Best Product” award at 100% Design SA. The second collection showcased at 100% Design UK in 2017.
Though it might be the Xibelani-inspired pendant light that won this year’s Most Beautiful Object in South Africa, it’s definitely not the only beautiful product she’s made. Her are some of Mjo’s other stunning designs:
The Potjie Server Table
The Black Toti Table Lamp
The Mojo Chair
The Umbhaco Lampshade
