Sama-winning singer Thandiswa Mazwai is calling for women instrumentalists to audition for her all-female band.
Mazwai’s one of the most successful performers in SA, with two successful albums under her belt. Now the former member of Afro-fusion band Bongo Maffin – who’s currently on the Graceland Tour with Paul Simon – is forming an all-women band who’ll be sharing the stage with her. Auditioning instrumentalists will be required to prepare at least three of Mazwai’s songs and one of their own that will showcase their style and skills.
With Women’s Month just weeks away, Mazwai’s aiming to create awareness about gender equality within the local music industry, which is infamous for being male dominated. As a result, successful women backing instrumentalists are a rare sight.
Mazwai follows in the footsteps of local Eighties all-girl band Clout and international superstar Beyoncé, who formed an all-women band in 2006. She’s known for her energetic stage presence and dynamic performances, having appeared with the likes of Hugh Masekela and Alicia Keys, among others.
Auditions will be held at the Bassline in Newtown, Johannesburg from 1-3 August. Successful applicants will be announced on 5 August. For further information, email: kingthawantsyou@gmail.com or visit: http://www.facebook.com/KingThaAllWomanBand
