Five traits for advertising success

As a primarily creative industry, advertising requires lots of personality. See if you have what it takes.

It's true of any industry, if you do something you're passionate about that's half the battle. Nowhere does this apply more than in the advertising industry, an industry founded in energy, personality and creativity. We chat to our advertising mentors about the characteristics needed for success in advertising.

Tenacity
Along the way people will tell you that you can't do it. They'll reject your inspired ad campaign, or tell you you'll never make it in this industry. Don't listen! "Tenacity if one of the personality traits it takes to succeed in advertising," says MD of Lowe Bull, Sarah Dexter. Determination and an ability to bounce back from adversity will take you far in your advertising career.

Positivity
Positivity is another essential characteristic of a successful advertiser, says Dexter. If you want someone to choose your pitch and believe in the product you're promoting, you need to trust that it will work. Advertising is a tough industry, but it is your attitude that determines your success. "Ensure you have an absolute passion for advertising before pursuing it as a career," suggests Dexter.

Curiosity
Brad Reilly, Chief Creative Officer at the Jupiter Drawing Room says that curiosity is essential in the advertising industry. "Learn from those around you, ask questions and listen to what they have to say," he advises. Dexter agrees. "A desire to constantly expand your mind is a must," she says.

Open-mindedness
Both Reilly and Dexter stress the importance of open-mindedness. Advertising is not your average 9-5 job. In an industry that demands creativity almost anything goes and being uptight won't get you far. "You have to be open to new things," says Dexter. "If you need security and routine, don't think about this industry".

Willingness
Reilly also highlights the importance of staying motivated. A willingness to go the extra mile, to return to the drawing board when your idea needs reworking and to take criticism will stand any ad executive in good stead. Enthusiasm and a good work ethic are essential in any career.
