The 38th annual Grahamstown Arts Festival’s impressive line-up will wow local and international arts lovers.
National Arts Festival reports Mid-way Growth
The National Arts Festival CEO has announced a mid-way growth in the festival tickets since kicked off on the 28th of June.
Since the festival kicked off there has already been a halfway increase in the ticket sales of around 11,5%. “Our first-half figures show that compared to the same period last year, the number of the tickets has grown by around 11.8% across both main and fringe,” says the CEO of the Festival Tony Lankster.
More than 50 000 arts lovers flock to Grahamstown for the annual National Arts Festival every year. For 11 days the small Eastern Cape city is transformed into a stage for artists in theatre, dance, the visual arts and music to showcase their work.
The event will see the 2012 Young Artist award winners take centre stage and introduce their work to a wider audience. This year’s festival will see the launch of the French/South African season with the support of the Department of Arts and Culture and the Embassy of France.
Here’s what to expect at this year’s festival:
• This year’s music line-up promises a week of great music across all genres including jazz. The headline act is Young Artist Afrika Mkhize. Other acts include jazz diva Sibongile Khumalo, internationally acclaimed group Mango Groove, award-winning R&B crooner Loyiso Bala and many more.
• Theatre lovers can enjoy street theatre productions in public spaces around the city. The Student Theatre Festival will also be showcasing 13 productions from the students in the theatre and drama industry. Young Artist award winner Princess Mzizi Mhlongo will be showcasing her production Trapped before it moves to Austria.
• There is also a great line-up for dance lovers including Bailey Snyman’s critically acclaimed piece Moffie.
• Art exhibitions will be exhibited in different galleries for all the visual art fans.
• The popular flea markets across the city will be there for those who love shopping.
