Learn how to treat your dry and chapped lips with these home remedies
Dry and chapped lips are a common problem during winter and can be very uncomfortable and painful. It's important to protect your lips from chapping not only for your appearance, but also for your health. Here are some natural home remedies to help keep your lips soft and moist.
Water smart
We often neglect drinking plenty of water on cold days, but it's one of the easiest ways to help your dry and chapped lips. Dehydration in the body is the main cause of any kind of dryness, so keep your body well hydrated and drink lots of water.
Food for thought
Following a healthy diet that's rich in vitamin A will help to treat your dry and chapped lips. Some foods rich in vitamin A are carrots, green leafy vegetables, tomatoes, legumes and whole grains. So make sure you eat these foods daily.
Easy exfoliation
Exfoliating your lips often will remove the dead skin and leave your lips soft and smooth. An easy home remedy is to mix sugar and honey together. Rub this onto your lips for about three minutes and rinse off. For best results, exfoliate your lips at least once a week.
Butter benefits
Butter or pure ghee offers great benefits for dry and chapped lips. Apply it directly to the lips. This will smooth the lips and heal the cracks.
Healthy honey
Honey has anti-bacterial properties that help in healing dry lips. Simply dab some honey onto your lips, but don't lick them – even though this is very tempting. The honey will feel very soothing on the lips and leave them feeling soft.
Cool cucumber
This must be one of the easiest ways to treat dry lips – simply rub a slice of cucumber onto your lips and leave the juice on for about 15 minutes. Repeat this process often to treat your lips.
Aloe vera magic
Another great cure for dry and chapped lips is aloe vera. This is a great home remedy that will leave your lips feeling soothed and soft. You can either use aloe vera gel or aloe vera juice. Rub it onto your cracked lips and repeat this for a few days.
Top tip
Licking your lips might make them feel better temporarily, but you are making matters worse by doing this. The constant exposure to saliva will drain the moisture from your lips, causing them to become even dryer. So avoid licking your lips.
