Jozi gets its own international film festival

Johannesburg is set to get its very own international film festival next year.

For film buffs who've been wondering when the city of Johannesburg will play host to its very own international movie festival, it's been confirmed that 2013 is the year this will happen.

Speaking at a cocktail evening hosted by the Gauteng Film Commission (GFC) yesterday, CEO Mzwandile Masina said it was about time that Gauteng honoured the arts and culture.

Actors Rosie Motene, Akin Omtoso, Kagiso Rakoga and Gugu Zuma were among those in attendance.

Masina explained that the GFC held the film industry in high regard, as it contributed to the province’s economic growth. Transforming the industry into a mighty force was a priority, he said, adding that the Jozi film festival would receive maximum support from local government and its stakeholders.

“The MEC has decided that this will be expanded to include all industry subsectors. We look forward to working with and broadening the film industry. Everyone can benefit. Fruitful discussion is the key to encouraging everyone to participate,” he said.

In addition, Marketing Manager of GFC, Zizi Kodwa, said he appreciated the huge steps taken by the commission to develop and sustain skills in film. The film industry had helped to reduce unemployment in many countries and was a key factor in boosting tourism to the SA, he added.

“Johannesburg has everything. You'll find New York here and Atlanta City. If you want us to create the Indian Ocean, we'll create it,” said Kodwa.

Masina later bade farewell to the cast and crew of several films which would be screened at the Durban International Film Festival this week. The films, which were supported by the commission, include Elelwani, which was selected to open the festival and is the first Venda movie.
