The iconic supplier of quality skin and hair care products opens its first store in Sandton City, Johannesburg
Global beauty enthusiasts will be very excited to hear that they no longer have to stock up on the famous Kiehl’s Lip Balm or the fabulous Midnight Recovery Concentrate (more on that later!) on their travels. Now you can get your favourite brand right in Sandton City.
For those not familiar with the brand, it’s a story that we love sharing because it’s proof that quality products, personalised service and sound ethics go a long way in ensuring the longevity of a brand. And with a 160-year track record, Kiehl’s is obviously delivering on those elements.
A brand is born
Originally opened in New York as a European-style pharmacy by John Kiehl, it quickly developed a reputation for supplying New York’s eclectic citizenry with unique preparations and hand-blended fragrant essences. In 1910, Kiehl’s apprentice Irving Morse took over the pharmacy and continued the tradition of personalised service. Today, “the Kiehl’s experience” is still key to the brand, as is the message of: “We are delighted to serve you.”
Sampling for all
Also key to Kiehl’s is the “Try before you buy” sampling philosophy, which ensures that each customer that leaves the stores received “prescribed” formulas for their needs – just as the pharmacist used to dispense advice and prescriptions. Their motto is simple: if people try the products, they will buy them.
Over the years that focus of the business has changed in other ways – most notably that Kiehl’s no longer dispenses prescriptions or sells raw ingredients, but instead only carries Kiehl’s-formulated and -branded quality products for skin and hair for men, women and children – a true one-stop family personal care shop.
Distribution is now global with retail partnerships around the world. In South Africa, the store is located within Edgars Sandton (lower level).
