Lady Gaga has decided to create her own social networking site for her fans and almost 25 million Twitter followers.

Looks like the multi-talented and entrepreneurial Lady Gaga is setting her sights on the Internet. Could Mark Zuckerburg's billions of dollars have spurred her on? Either way, the singer and queen of social media has decided to create Little Monsters – a social networking site built around her huge fan base. Little Monsters is Gaga's nickname for her fans.

According to MTV.com, Little Monsters will focus on fans sharing and creating multimedia content and will allow users to rate cool content. The site is being launched by Backplane, a tech start-up company co-founded by Gaga's manager, Troy Carter

Gaga reportedly holds a 20%-stake in the company. Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt has also invested in Backplane through his investment fund Tomorrow Ventures.

"Backplane will provide a platform and tools for communities to socialise and communicate on a more focused level," Carter told the New York Times.

According to Internet news website Mashable.com the site, which is in invite-only beta testing mode at the moment, shows some similarity to Pinterest. Pinterest is a virtual pin board website that allows users to pin pictures, locations and things they like to user-created "boards" on the website. Little Monsters also uses elements of the Reddit site, by allowing fans to rate content they are into.

"Backplane is about bringing together communities and Gaga's community just so happens to be the community we're using to learn about proper functionality," CEO Matt Michelsen was quoted as saying on MTV.com. "We think we can really change the world."

Backplane plans to launch the site out of beta phase at an "undetermined time". They hope to leverage Gaga's massive online following to bring users to the new sites. As of Monday 21 May, Gaga had a recorded 330 000 followers on Google+, more than 50 million Facebook fans and more than one billion views on YouTube
