Actress dishes on celibacy vow and how she hopes to inspire the youth.
Actress Meagan Good intends to inspire young couples with her decision to remain celibate until she gets married later this year.
Good is set to wed pastor and film executive Devon Franklin in Malibu, California. The two have been dating for over a year and recently got engaged. Good explained that their decision to remain celibate until their wedding night was to express their commitment to their relationship and honour God.
The couple spoke to Sister to Sister magazine at a gala dinner hosted by TD Jakes over the weekend. Franklin said he hoped their union would encourage other couples to remain chaste throughout their relationship while Meagan said eliminating physical intimacy had allowed them to become closer, bond and know what they were getting themselves into.
“We want our marriage to be one of truth, one of love, and hopefully model God’s love. In reality we’re not perfect. But we are striving to live a life of Christ. We are striving to be an example of what his life looks like on this earth, and hopefully through our union people will be inspired, people will see themselves in us,” said Franklin.
In addition, Good stated their relationship had a special quality about it. “When you know somebody and you know their heart, it’s not even a question about the physical part of it that comes into play completely later on. You don’t just want to be with this person on Friday night, but Saturday afternoon too. That’s just icing on the cake."
Other celebrities who have taken a vow of celibacy include Prince who is a devout Jehovah's Witness, musician Lenny Kravitz, singer Lady Gaga and model Jessica White.
After two failed marriages, Prince joined the Jehovah's Witness faith in 2003. He has been celibate ever since as the faith requires its members to abstain from sex until marriage.
Lady Gaga confessed to the UK's Daily Mail she was prompted by the rapid increase of HIV in women to refrain from sex. “I’m single right now and I’ve chosen to be single because I don’t have the time to get to know anybody. So it’s okay not to have sex... celibacy’s fine."
Lenny Kravitz explained his decision to remain celibate a while ago by stating he wanted to develop a meaningful relationship with the woman in his life. “It’s a promise I made until I get married. Where I’m at in life, the women have got to come with something else, not just the body, but the mind and spirit," he told Maxim magazine.
According to Essence magazine, Jessica White said she had been let down by failed unions in the past. This led to her taking a vow of celibacy.
