Hollywood hairstylists will now be able to enter a top hairdo category.
The Oscars committee has amended its best makeup category to include nominations for best hairstyling. This was recently announced by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences. As of the next awards ceremony taking place in February 2013, the amended category come into effect.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, for years stylists have petitioned the Oscar committee to be included in the hair stylist category. Ted Gibson who has styled the likes of award winning actress, Angelina Jolie started a campaign on social networks calling for the category change.
"It's time for hairdressers to be recognised. We need to bring awareness to the Academy. I am so excited that the Academy is finally recognising hairdressers in films. It's a great start.
"People have gone to the Academy for decades to try to get hair on the ballot and they haven't responded at all. I feel proud to be part of the movement to make a change."
Gibson has 20 years experience in the film industry and is highly respected by his peers. Gibson began his campaign titled “We need an Oscar for hair” about a year ago.
On why the Oscars should include a hair category Gibson commented: "I know that Bette Davis in the early '30s was trying to get her hairdresser recognized, and they shot that down. There are so many hairdressers that have created these really iconic and amazing looks. And I thought, 'It's really weird that no one has ever been honored for it, and I want to start a campaign to let people know.'"
