If you’re tired of kissing frogs that never turn into princes, take this advice to find a suitable mate.

Before you lose hope that The One is out there, take advice from Sandra Brownrigg, a clinical psychologist on meeting and keeping the right guy for you:

1. Know what you want
Define what kind of man is the right guy for you. Knowing what you want is the first step to finding it.

2. Be realistic
There is no such thing as the perfect person, so set realistic expectations for yourself and him. “Be certain of your expectations and know what you want, but be realistic too,” Brownrigg says.

3. Be honest
Be honest with yourself about what you want and don’t settle for less. If you meet a guy with potential, be honest with him about what sort of relationship you are looking for, so if he’s not on the same path, you can move on.

4. Go to the right places
“Go to places that will have the kind of guy you are looking for,” Brownrigg says. Don’t look for an adventurous guy in the library.

5. Keep it moving
By now, you should know what you want, so don’t settle for the first taker. “If he’s not the guy for you, move on once you realise it. But if you think you could make it work, then communicate your needs and wants,” Brownrigg says.

6. Be yourself
Don’t pretend to be the person you think men want, as it will be difficult to keep up that facade. Instead, be yourself and you are bound to find someone who likes you for you.

7. No one is perfect
“Realise that there’s a bit of frog in every prince,” Brownrigg says. Learn to like someone for who they are – faults and all.
