Swimming is great for keeping those muffin tops and pot bellies at bay.
Swimming is an excellent all-round, non-impact exercise that’s perfect for the whole family. It tones your muscles, builds endurance and keeps your heart healthy without putting a strain on your joints.
But instead of aimlessly swimming up and down the lanes or letting the kids just splash around, why not try a focused training programme to get the most out of swimming.
Virgin Active has launched SWIM, a coaching programme designed to your fitness level and developed by Olympic Gold medallists Ryk Neethling and Chad le Clos. The great thing is that anyone can do it – from pregnant woman to older people and even serious athletes.
The programme guides you through three types of workouts: red (cardio), orange (strength) and yellow (balance), each with three levels of difficulty for beginner, intermediate and advanced swimmers.
Copies of the programme are available at the poolsides or can be downloaded from www.virginactive.co.za, so it’s as simple as choosing “orange – intermediate” and jumping in the pool. You can do it independently or have a swimming coach guide you to get started.
Says Neethling: “To be consistent, I recommend at least two workouts a week. This way, small improvements will happen every day and after a while, this can add up to quite a bit.”
