Here's how to keep your feet healthy and problem-free.
During cold winter months we tend to hide our feet in warm socks and boots. Even though this is nice and cosy, it's not a reason to let yourself go. Looking after your feet is essential, so take some time out and treat your feet. Here are five easy steps to keep your feet healthy this winter.
1. Trim Nails
Start by clipping your toenails to a consistent length and file them straight across in one direction, keeping the shape square. Round the nails off at the edges. Avoid nails that are too short, kept too long or cut badly, as this can lead to painful ingrown toenails.
2. Cuticle Care
Treat your cuticles weekly by gently pushing the skin back with an orange stick. It is best to do this after a bath, as the skin will be soft. Overgrown cuticles can also lead to painful ingrown toenails.
3. Scrub and Moisturise
Soak your feet and use a pumice stone daily to scrub off dry, dead skin from under your feet. Another alternative is to use a grainy foot scrub at least twice a week in the shower to remove dead skin. Apply a thick foot cream to keep your tootsies moisturised and soft.
4. Ditch the Polish
Give your toenails a break from nail polish. Instead, buff the nails with a cushioned nail buffer until they are glossy. Not only will your nails look healthy, the buffing will also stimulate circulation.
5. Treat your Feet
Massage your feet daily for a few seconds, as this will relax your feet and re-plump the fatty cushions under your toes and heels. Use a thick foot cream to nourish and moisturise your feet.
