Twitter furore over Camagwini death rumour

Social network rocked by Camagwini’s “death”.

It all started with a Facebook post claiming singer Camagwini had died. The status was evidently posted by Camagwini’s cousin. Within minutes the news had spread to social networking site Twitter on 16 May.

Twitter users posted messages of condolence, with several celebrities adding to the furore over the singer’s alleged death. Afro soul singer Zonke Dikana was one of the first celebs to tweet, saying: “I'm saddened by this news, Camagwini what a beautiful heart and soul! Rest In Paradise, I will never forget u."
Actor Fana Mokoena tweeted: “Okay. So Camagwini really IS gone. Man, this is not cool. Two brilliant musicians in less than a month. Not cool. RIP. Respect.”

More celebrities, including Trevor Madondo, Ntsiki Mazwai, Kgomotso Moeketsi and Loyiso Bala also tweeted messages of condolence about the singer. Some Twitter users slammed it as a publicity stunt, stating Camagwini (real name Siphokazi Buti) had told her sister to spread the rumour in anticipation of her upcoming album.

Drum magazine and Vuzu entertainment later issued apologies for issuing statements the singer had died without proper verification.

Earlier this week, Generations actor Menzi Ngubane also "died" in Twitterville. It was later confirmed he was alive and well.
