Designer David Tlale chats to us about his all-white resort collection which he unveiled on a side street in the colourful Bo-Kaap area during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Cape Town.
Revered designer David Tlale has become know for his artistic runway productions which are always held at a secret and exotic location. This time, a side street in the colourful Bo-Kaap was transformed into a makeshift catwalk. Here Tlale presented a completely white collection bar white stockings dipped in bursts of pink, orange, yellow and blue which offset the surrounding buildings.
The collection and show, titled I am NOT Colored, I am Color, was inspired by Tlale's coloured heritage and the colourful lifestyle and tradition of the Bo-Kaap people. Models draped in colourful veils shed them to unveil designs in white lace, leather and silk chiffon. The models traipsed down the runway with bright curlers in their hair, some covered by headscarves. Tlale says he used a blank canvas of white so as not to detract from the intricate detailing of the clothing and to highlight the colourful buildings and Bo-Kaap surrounds.
