When silence is NOT golden.

From my heart to yours...

One of my lowest moments was on Sunday 25 July just after 11h00am. I received a not-very friendly call from my aunt, threatening me screaming and shouting.  "How dare you talk about this? How dare you talk about that? Don't ever call me again because as of today I want nothing to do with you!"

My efforts to get a word in were in vain. She puts the phone down as soon as she was done. I tried to gather myself, trying to make sense of what had just happened. I called back, but she didn't answer.

I send a text message asking her how she could call me, threaten me and shout at me and not give me a chance to say something or defend myself. But then I realised that that was exactly the problem with my family, the reason why healing cannot take place, why the dysfunctionality continues - because it has always been the senior members who could say and do as they pleased and the rest just had to shut up and listen.

After sending the text message, I received another call from my aunt: "How dare you send me a text message?!", she shouted and put the phone down again. I realised I wouldn't get very far. I have done a lot of emotional growth and screaming matches don't work for me.

I send another text message, saying that UNLESS we would sit down and talk and everybody would listen and respect the other persons opinion and feelings, that it would be impossible for healing to take place in our family.

My Sunday was turned upside down.   I just had to speak to someone and called my sister, Catherine. It was only after speaking with her that I could tell my husband what had happened. I tried my best to continue with my Sunday as planned. It was difficult.

I have briefly seen my eldest sister and have spoken a few words with her a few months ago. It was the most awkward moment in my life - it felt like the person in front of me was a total stranger. Perhaps she felt the same about me.   Because it felt so awkward I reasoned that was all the more reason to try and do something about it.

I later reached out to her because I was tired of our "broken" family.   I realised she too was struggling to put the anger and resentment behind her she felt towards my father. I thought I could help her, but my help was turned down. I accepted it because I know we all have our own time and when we are not ready to deal with pain, we simply aren't.

It took me years to put the anger and resentment (as a result of the sibling abuse I and two other siblings endured) behind me. The wisdom of empathy made me look deeper and further.   I could understand that she perhaps was conditioned into believing that the oldest and the strongest one has the power and the right to control the rest. I could understand that the abusive man my father was, was largely to blame for it.

I look back and see how this disfunctionality is passed on from one generation to the next and I have had enough. I have decided to break the vicious cycle.

For years I couldn't speak up because of my feelings of worthlessness, my lack of assertiveness. Today I have my voice back, that is what brought on my healing.

For me it is a matter of intention. My intention is solely to create awareness and to use my experiences to educate others of a better way. I have peace in my heart and sleep soundly because I do not go out and hurt people because I know what it feels like.

As parents we are extremely powerful. I look back at the woman my mother was. I look at the abuse she endured at the hand of my father. She eventually made the decision to take back her power, but I wonder: "Was it a little too late?" Because even though they have both passed on, the effects of the bad relationship continue to exist.

I have not given up on my family, on the healing that needs to take place, that hopefully will - eventually. I am not angry. I am just sorry about the whole situation because I know that emotional growth only takes place after we have dealt with our issues.

I am grateful that I was granted this wonderful gift.
