Identity crisis

I was recently asked to put together a short paragraph on who I am and what I do. Have you ever tried to encapsulate all that you are into a line or two? One would think it to be quite challenging and yet we do it every day.

Usually if we ask someone to tell us about themselves, the very first thing they will tell us is what they do. Upon them giving us this information, we will immediately put together an image of that person. The image will no doubt come with both general and our own preconceived ideas about this person’s identity all as a result of a series of associations. Eg. Accountant = wealthy but boring, model = beautiful but not very intelligent etc.

As a marketing manager I deal with these issues every day, it’s called branding. This brings me to my own very interesting and somewhat complex brand challenge; I am a spinning instructor, life coach, marketing manager and writer. And that’s just ‘me’ in my various work portfolios. Most people would possibly call these seemingly unrelated, collective roles nothing less than an identity crisis. For me it’s about doing the things I love that link to everything I do through my approach and my values.

It seems to be a particularly Western idea to relate our identity directly to our vocation. And yet are we so much more than that. I often work with coaching clients to try to identify less with their respective roles, be it personal or professional, and more with their ‘essence’. The reason being that we are generally able to cope with change better, when we can navigate our way based on our intrinsic values, rather than our attachment to a particular title or situation. For instance if someone’s values include being value driven, energetic, passionate and fun loving; they will be able to adapt to a change, that allows them to live these values, more easily than someone who is holding to a particular image of themselves.

Of course we don’t always get to choose certain changes that occur in our lives; at least not consciously, but the key in finding happiness and peace lies in not being too tied up to the connotations of the old situation or role.

Anyway I still need to put together that paragraph so best I go and do that but before I go, I thought I’d relay the thoughts I saw on a fridge magnet today. It said “You are so much more than you give yourself credit for”

Remember to stay connected,

Love

# re: Identity crisis Interesting topic Lisa! In Cape Town one of the first questions one is asked (sadly) is what you do for a living (and you are then immediate judged upon answering).

Constructing one's personal identity is much more complicated than applying the basic brand principles. Sociologists are very much opposed to the idea that a person can have an essence, for instance, but basic brand development principles could help one to structure one's thinking a bit more....So, I suppose it's a combination of the 'best practise' approaches in different fields.

# re: Identity crisis As far back as I can recall in my junior high school days, I was introduced to this issue that I didn't realise existed - I guess when you're 14 you don't think about whether you know who you are or not...because you think you do.

Ten years later, still unable to really define who I am apart from what I do or have, until recently. A new concept was introduced to me a few months ago. BE-DO-HAVE. Most of us live our live on the reverse of this concept, we want to HAVE certain things (maybe a degree) in order to DO (maybe work) those things that will possibly make us who we think we should BE. I've learnt to change that and focus on discovering who I am before I make certain decisions in order to have the things that will give me that ultimate goal - a feeling of pure contentment. Identity crisis, still an interesting topic to this day!

# re: Identity crisis heya lisa!you know i really enjoyed the read. At face value one shrugs off the idea that we could be dealing with identity crisis challenges - but really if we investigate our lives we'l learn that so many or our problems result from not being secure in who we are. BE-DO-HAVE like the reader earlier commented. that's the way to live and then we'l be able to define who we are!keep up the good work!:)

# re: Identity crisis hi Lisa, I read your blog 3 days ago, and after reading it, the title alone provoked a lot of emotions and thoughts.
and between now and then
I have been asking myself
numerous questions,
questions that I can not
seem to answwer
Because I dont know
whom or what to identify
myself with.

I'm trying to identity
myself
with the innocents dreams
that I had whilst I was
growing up. because they were real, true and authentic.

I await patiently for your article for my own
selfish reasons,
those reasons being
that I hope after reading
your article,
more emotions and thoughts
will surface,
so that I get rid of my own Identity crisis.

how does one carry on
in life without knowing THE SELF?

# re: Identity crisis I think after many years of trials and tribulations in the journey of my life, i can honestly say that it is truly difficult to identify with oneself, but very easy to identify oneself. What i mean is some people's lives revolves around their work that the first thing they talk about is their job whereas others could identify more with their families so much that everything is about their family. Either way I believe because what makes a person is more than just our work and our families, the quest is to continue finding our real selves......The many recipes that makes us who we are

But i've leaned to take it one step at a time as time goeas on i write or note all the things that excite me and those that make me to say i'm Marcia. You are able to succed in life once you know who trully you are.
