Are domestic cleaners in demand?

Can I please have some feedback...

Are you a young professional or a mother in charge of a household?

Would you have a domestic helper or do you currently have one?

How much do you pay or how much would you be willing to pay for one?

I am based in Durban and am starting up a cleaning service. I am still in the research phase though and would greatly appreciate any feedback. If you have any pointers or ideas please feel free to let me know.

# re: Are domestic cleaners in demand? Hi, I'll speak for myself. Im a young proffesional who live alone. But I would appreciate a once-a-week cleaning service to spring clean, wash and iron. because sometimes we just get so busy with other things and that sort of help is appreciated. Affordability is key though.

# re: Are domestic cleaners in demand? I am a professional opera singer, a mother of two, a wife, and a socialite. I do all house chores but it can be a challenge at times. i can do with some body full time but i also like my space and want things to be done perfectly, so i would rather opt for someone who cleans thoroughly twice a week and does my laundry, otherwise i can do the chores. i know that my lifestyle might force me to have someone full time in future.

# re: Are domestic cleaners in demand? I currently do not have a domestic worker - she resigned over a year ago & i have just not been able to find someone who's good enough. I live with my partner currently but i was staying alone for about 4years.
I think i trust people who are referred or were previously employed by people i know - family, friends & colleagues.

# re: Are domestic cleaners in demand? I would be lost without my domestic helper. I work full time - from home and often leave home early to go to clients and/or meetings. I am grateful to have a full time helper even though this year I felt I could replace her with a part time one as my children have finished school but she has served me extremely well and I'll probably keep her still

# re: Are domestic cleaners in demand? We (two adults and 2 kids)have a lady assisting at home, an absolute god-send . She sleep-in during week and goes home every weekend. R2000 per month and R300 transport allowance. Most reliable, honest person and our personalities are compatible. Got her through an employment agency. I don't sweat the small stuff, if my kids are happy, my house is relatively clean and a cooked meal every eve, I AM HAPPY. Market is there for sure!!!

# re: Are domestic cleaners in demand? Hi, I am a wife, mother of 3, employed full time and working on a business idea. I have two helpers, one for the kids who stays in and one for household tasks. I dont sweat the small stuff as well, what is important to me is mutual respect. What I find is some employers often forget that helpers are human. I believe in rest, fair remuneration and open communication. I also prefer to get someone through someone I know and I always interview I don't just give work to the next person who is needing work - it has to be the right fit. Noma

# re: Are domestic cleaners in demand? Hi Phumi, I think the demand for domestic work that comes in once or twice a week is increasing. Also people pay different amounts depending on availability of labour, location and accessibility. I suggest you check with the DOL what the minimums are for the areas you want to service and then add on about 50 - 100%. That is approximately what most will pay.

# re: Are domestic cleaners in demand? I currently don't have a domestic cleaner but could use one, problem is I wouldn't want one that sleeps over, but I'm not sure how reliable would the ones that commute be in terms of turning up to work on time. But there is definitely a market.

# re: Are domestic cleaners in demand? I believe so, but more so, it's the cheap and affordable workers that are in demand. Unlike the white communities at Umhlanga and La Lucia, the average black working mom or wife is not particularly eager to pay in excess of R 1000.00 for domestic assistance. Especially since they usually come with a bag full of excuses and can easily leave you hanging when you need them the most. I had that same trouble with both my kids. Yes I'm still at home living with sisters and brothers but the kind of help that I needed was not available at home and I struggled to find a helper. Even when I found one, things didn't go well. I also found that as a young mother, I found it difficult to discipline a nanny. As a result I often dismiss them or they quit. In other words, had there been a company that hired out helpers at an affordable price I would've went for it. Unless of course they were really good, then I'd pay anything.

# re: Are domestic cleaners in demand? I would be lost without mine. She's fulltime, and she keeps my home running, ensuring that I focus on work and family, rather than whether the dishes are done. So yes, I'd say domestic workers are in demand.
