After a recent trip to the Big Apple, Nthato came back home to South Africa to report back on the latest hair trends on the streets of New York. Here are the top three trends he spotted and some tips to update your style:

Trend 1: 80s inspired
History definitely has a way of repeating itself. More than 20 years on and we are taking inspiration from the hairstyles of the 80s. While some styles need to remain in the past, Rihanna revived 80s hair when she went long and cherry red. According to Nthato, she's inspired a wave of colour in New York and a return to the pin-up look with cute hair accessories, curls and Dianna Ross-style huge hair. "Women of all races are adopting this look, but be careful not to do something you'll regret. Hair needs to be bleached before it is dyed cherry red. I recommend adding some red extensions instead to maintain the good condition of your hair," says Nthato.

Trend 2: The bob
Victoria Beckham revolutionised the 21st-century bob a few years ago and some variations have sprung up since. A testament that any age can wear this trend is American First Lady, Michelle Obama. "You can wear this look in many ways. Stick to safe yet sophisticated like Michelle, or create an oversized bump at the front with loads of volume. Some brave fashionistas spike their bob up into a Mohawk - a real statement look," says Nthato

Trend 3: Updated Mohawk
The traditional Mohawk is characterised by shaved sides and longer hair down the middle of the head. But today, this trend has taken many different forms. Cassie braved it by shaving one side of her luscious, long locks and was swiftly followed by the likes of Willow Smith. Nthato's particularly excited about this trend: "Just shave one side. As simple as that. You can keep your natural curl or braids or use a relaxer for the super straight look Willow loves."
