Tanaz Hair, Body and Nails is situated in Illovo, Johannesburg and is concidered one of the leading salons in SA. Shelene Shaer, owner of Tanaz and hairdresser and hairdresses Phepa Moloi hairdresser took fives minutes out of their busy day to share some hair love with us.

What is inspiring you right now?
Shelene: Revival, feminine and everything works. This has been one of the best years in hairdressing with women – natural beauty and yet such elegant looks. Also, the flexibility that we have with change today, with weaves and extensions, etc.

Is there any particular hair trend you love right now?
Shelene: I love the ombre look.

Any predictions for new hair trends this year?
Shelene: Ombre hair is still going to dominate 2012 and get even stronger. Ombre is a French word that means "shades" and is also used for clothing in a dip-dying process. It has also been dubbed "recessionista", as this is a very easy colour to maintain from a cost point of view. You would work as close to your natural colour as possible and then work with different shades, from blonde to warm tones of red. We are also seeing a lot of very bold, vibrant shades on the catwalk, such as purple, blue, red and greens. These shades are available, but we tend to encourage clients to use Great Lengths extensions should they want to play with colour. You could also do ombre on dreadlocks. Last but not least, if you have grey hair, now is the time to grow some of those strands through.

What is the most requested celebrity look in your salon?
Shelene: A variety of Naomi Campbell's looks with either a fringe and her very Cleopatra look and this is so easily achieved with weaves. Jessica Biel and Sarah Jessica Parker with their fantastic ombre hair colours.

What are your top ethnic hair tips?
Phepa: – Massaging your scalp on a regular basis will stimulate oil production, which will help reduce dryness of your hair.
– Avoid hair products that contain alcohol, which dries your hair.
– Get a hot oil treatment once a month, which will remoisture your scalp and hair.
– Use a mild moisturising shampoo with a low pH-level when washing your hair.

Any final words of hair wisdom?
Shelene: Remember that your hair is an outfit that you wear daily and can't leave at home, so develop a good relationship with your hair and learn to handle it and understand it. Most importantly, remember your cut is everything – if it is good, you will feel good. Also keep healthy, as this helps hair look shiny and lustrous. Conditioning is so important to keep hair moisturised.
