The two-toned manicure has become very trendy and was seen at many international fashion shows, including Donna Karan, Bill Blass and Badgley Mischka. Rihanna was also spotted sporting this look while promoting the movie Battleship in London (see image).

This nail trend is similar to the French manicure, but instead of using a nude tone polish with white tips, you use two colourful shades. Follow our five easy steps below to create this modern two-toned manicure.

Step 1: Prep your nails
Trim your nails in the shape you prefer, then file them with an emery board, stroking the board in one direction. By doing this, you will avoid splitting your nails. Push back the cuticles and gently buff the top of the nails to create a smooth surface for the nail polish.

Step 2: Apply a base coat
Always start your manicure by applying a base coat first. This will protect your fingernails from staining and it will also help the colour to go on smoothly. It also helps your nail polish to look fresh and last longer.

Step 3: Apply the first colour
Start by painting on the first colour of your choice. Allow to dry thoroughly and apply a second coat if needed. You can choose a fun and funky colour to create an on-trend colour combo, like bright pink on the nails with orange tips, or yellow on the nails with blue tips. The other option is to use a deeper colour, like dark red on the nails and a glitter polish, like gold or bronze, on the tips.

Step 4: Paint tips with second colour
Once the first nail colour is completely dry, paint the second colour of your choice on the tips of your nails. Keep the line thin and clean, otherwise it will look tacky.

Step 5: Apply a top coat
Finally, seal the nail polish with a top coat. This step is important, since it adds a gorgeous glossy finish to the nails and prevents chipping. It also make the polish last longer.
