Davido took top international honours when he won the BET Best International Act: Africa. It was a close win as he was up against SA’s Mafikizolo, Diamond Platnumz of Tanzania, Sarkodie from Ghana, Tiwa Savage from Nigeria and Togo’s Toofan.
The Nigerian-American musician and record label owner has had a great year and is fresh from bagging two MTV Africa Music Awards.
At 21, Davido is making music history by being one of the youngest African stars to win a slew of international awards. He has also collaborated with Mafikizolo on a new hit track, Tshelete and boasts partnerships with artists such as Naeto C, Tiwa Savage and Ice Prince.
Since the release of his debut album Omo Baba Olowo, in 2012, Davido’s smooth tribal- and hip-hop-infused music has won him a global audience. He was recently involved in Multichoice’s CSI campaign and voiced the song Rise Up with Tiwa Savage, Diamond Platnumz, Sarkodie, British songbird Lola Rae and SA band MiCasa.
The BET awards yielded very few surprises with Beyoncé raking in two awards for Best Female R&B/Pop Artist and the FANdemonium Award. Pharrell Williams also emerged triumphant, winning Best Male R&B/Pop Artist and Best Video.

Since releasing her latest album Braveheart, singer Ashanti (ABOVE LEFT) has been a regular on the Hollywood red carpet scene. The Grammy winner wore a lace-sleeved, figure-hugging white dress which showed off her voluptuous figure. Pearly white was the colour choice of a number of celebs, including Gabrielle Union (ABOVE RIGHT) who paired her empire-line gown with thigh-high boots.
Homegrown beauty, Nhlanhla Nciza (ABOVE LEFT) stunned in a cream white and black embroidered gown. While we wish she’d ditched the lacy throw, the Mafikizolo vocalist certainly turned many a head in her ethnic number. New mom, Kerry Washington (ABOVE RIGHT) went for a simple look in a short, floral dress. Pretty as it was, Kerry’s outfit was a bit too laid back for such a glamorous event, but we’ll forgive her indiscretion this time around.
Amber Rose (ABOVE LEFT) was radiant in an ivory floor-length dress, which she accessorised with a simple gold belt. Mrs Wiz Khalifa ticked all the right boxes and we love that she kept her makeup flawless. Nigerian superstar, Tiwa Savage (ABOVE RIGHT) walked the red carpet in an indigo dress with a sheer top.
Artist Tamar Braxton (ABOVE LEFT) rocked an old-school nineties look with her halter-neck, high-slit dress. Nicki Minaj (ABOVE RIGHT) went for a similar look in a clinging black frock. We adore Nicki’s renewed natural style, it’s a welcome break from the over-the-top look the rapper once embraced.
