Friends Like These presenter and Metro FM radio DJ Sbusiso Leope, popularly known as DJ Sbu, briefly appeared in the Hatfield Magistrate’s Court, Pretoria, today after being arrested for speeding on Friday evening.
Sbu was caught driving at 172km/h in a 120km/h zone on the N1 North while allegedly on his way to an event in Polokwane. His lawyers requested for the matter to be postponed pending further investigations. The state had no trouble agreeing to this request.
This is the third time the renowned DJ has been arrested for going over the speed limit. In 2007, Sbu was arrested after he’d been driving at over 250km/h on the N1 South next to the Grasmere Toll Plaza in his sponsored Audi TT. Shortly after the incident, the sponsor repossessed their vehicle. The court found him guilty of speeding and gave Sbu a choice between paying a R7 000 fine or a six-month jail sentence. He chose to pay for his freedom.
In another incident in 2012, Dj Sbu allegedly crashed into an ADT truck while driving his then-girlfriend’s car.
Today he acknowledged his wrongdoing and apologised, through his manager Katlego Mokoena, for his reckless actions, saying he regretted that this was happening again.
His next court appearance will be at the end of September.
