Which celebrities are currently rocking this trend right now?
Rihanna, Viola Davis (my client), Tia Mowery (my client) . . . But honestly, almost all celebrities are wearing them right now. Loads of celebrities are rocking it!

What tools does one need to create the perfect matte lip?
To achieve the perfect matte lip you need a quality lip balm to moisturise the lips and a good quality matte lipstick or liquid lipstick. I prefer liquid lipsticks right now as they wear smooth and if applied properly looks like perfection on the lips! MAC of course has great options (as always) – their Retro Matte Liquid Lipcolor line offers a variety of colours and quality.

A few brands that also have great options are REVLON, NYX, and Smashbox. REVLON has the Colorblast Matte Balm and REVLON is great quality for the money spent. NYX has a variety of options and loads of nudes for fair to medium skin tones. Smashbox has the Be Legendary Matte Lipstick line which is superb!

What are the most popular colours for matte lips this season?
Deep jewel tones and vibrant reds are most popular. Think wine, burgundy, candy apple red, black orchid, fuchsia, fire engine red, orange and purple. Nudes are also trendy colors, but work mostly for fair- to medium-complexioned women.

A few of my favourites:

REVLON Colorburst Matte Balm Colors, R155 each, in Shamless & Striking

MAC Retro Matte Liquid Lipcolour Colors, R280 each, in High Drama,  Fashion Legacy, and Tailored to Tease

Smashbox Legendary Matte Lipstick
Colors, R260 in Fireball and Screen Queen

Three steps to get the perfect matte lip
STEP 1: Make sure your lips are primed and smooth. A lip scrub is recommended every so often as this removes dead skin and smooths the lips. Follow with a good hydrating lip balm and then use it daily. If the lips are dry and scaly, the lipstick won’t lay properly.

Lush Mint Julips Lip Scrub, R95, is a good option. You can also make your own homemade scrub with brown sugar and honey.

A few recommendations for lip balm are Blistex DCT available at any pharmacist and Oh-Lief Roman Chamomile Lip Balm, R50, I love that it has natural properties and organic oils.

We recommend: Elizabeth Arden, Eight Hour Cream Intensive Lip Repair Balm, R225.

STEP 2: Apply one coat of lipstick, blot with a tissue and re-apply another coat. This locks lipstick down to allow a deeper colour and long-lasting pigment. (You may choose to use a liner, but this is not essential. Choose wisely as you don’t want a contrasting colour. Matte lipstick and liquid lipstick are different in texture and application than creme lipsticks, and won’t blend.)

STEP 3: Blot around the edges of your lips with a translucent powder to sharpen the lip and edges and to keep the lipstick from bleeding.

We recommend: A wonderful alternative to translucent powder is the Smashbox Always Sharp Clear Lip Liner, R255. It’s easy to apply without the worry of smudging lines around lips and a real gem to add to your make-up bag as it keep lipstick in place.

Would colour clashing work when doing matte lips, and if so, which combinations would you recommend for working women?
It absolutely works! The combinations are endless, just be sure to blend seamlessly. Here are a few combinations to try: Red & Coral, Orange & Gold, Black Orchid & Red, Purple & Pink.
