There are many hip-hop artists in the world who, by our standards, are doing extremely well, but only a select few have the privilege of making the Forbes Five club of hip-hop’s wealthiest.
Drake recently released his fourth studio album, Views, which went on to do better than Beyoncé’s Lemonade, selling an estimated 600 000 copies in the first week. Since then, Forbes has released its list of hip-hop’s wealthiest, and this club has a new member. Drake made his debut on the list with an estimated net worth of $60 million (R900 million).
The Hotline Bling star replaces 50 Cent, who recently filed for bankruptcy. Much of what has landed Drake his number five spot on the list is driven by his impressive music sales, tie-ins with Apple, and his Nike and Sprite endorsement deals.
While Drake has cashed up a major fortune, he still has a long way to go to catch up with his counterparts. In the number four spot, with almost double Drake’s wealth is Cash Money’s Birdman with an estimated net worth of $110 million (R1,6 billion). Birdman’s wealth has decreased by $30 million (R450 million) in the last year because of “turmoil in his empire”, but he’s still “rolling in the dough” – that is how you say it, right?
The number three spot is held by one of the most loved rappers of this century, Jay Z, with almost five times the wealth of Birdman. Jay Z’s net worth is estimated at a whopping $610 million (R9,1 billion), driven mainly by his Tidal music streaming service, which is said to be worth three times more than its initial $56 million price tag.

Dr Dre is firmly holding onto the number two spot on the list, with an estimated net worth of $710 million (R10,6 billion). A large part of his profit is from his sale of Beats by Dre to Apple in 2014, and last year’s highly successful biopic Straight Outta Compton.
And maintaining his top spot on the list is the one and only Diddy, who our very own Black Coffee has become acquainted with. Diddy has an estimated net worth of $750 million (R11,3 billion). That’s equivalent to winning 750 seasons of Survivor! Diddy has numerous income streams including his deal with Diego’s Ciroc vodka, his TV network Revolt, his clothing line Sean Jean, and his alkaline water Aquahydrate.
The combined wealth of these five individuals is $2,2 billion.
