Life is hectic these days, so it’s important to take some time for yourself or share moments of stillness with friends or loved ones to calm the body, mind and soul.

The Satyagraha House (right on your doorstep if you live in Johannesburg) is located a stones throw away from Louis Botha Avenue, in Orchards. The former home of Mahatma Ghandi is where his Satyagraha movement (a philosophy of passive resistance) was born.

Currently the property is split into a heritage site (with free admission for South African visitors) and a peaceful guesthouse where visitors can enjoy freshly made vegetarian meals created with organic produce. The winter special of carrot and ginger soup followed by a delicious vegetable stir-fry is a real treat! The house, surrounded by a concept based around Gandhi’s life – meditation and a simple life lived elegantly, also offers group yoga and meditation classes in the tranquil surrounding gardens.

A blissful synergy has been created between local spa and skincare brand Africology and Satyagraha house – a bespoke spa experience to complement one’s stay. The collaboration of a holistic therapy supporting Ayurveda (the Indian science of life) and the use of African plant oils promoting well-being is offered by trained therapists educated in the Africology AfriVeda ritual.
