It all started in April when a meme of the pair pictured together at a 2014 Miu Miu fashion show was tweeted with the caption: “Rihanna looks like she scams rich white men and Lupita is the computer-smart best friend that helps plan the scams.”

That post was subsequently retweeted more than 96 000 times, with the stars expressing interest in the fictional story – which turns out, will now become a reality.

According to Entertainment Weekly, the movie will be directed by Ava DuVernay, who was behind Selma, and the script will reportedly be written by Issa Rae of Insecure fame.

The movie has been commissioned for Netflix, following an aggressive bidding war among those interested in bringing the pitch to life.

Sources say the film could go into production early next year.

Rihanna will be back on the big screen soon in Ocean’s Eight alongside Cate Blanchett and Sandra Bullock, and in sci-fi adventure Valerian, while fans can look forward to seeing Nyong’o in Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Marvel’s Black Panther.
