The recently released Lifetime biopic of disgraced athlete Oscar Pistorius has caused a lot of outrage on social media. The movie, Oscar Pistorius: Blade Runner Killer, recounts the Paralympian’s trial for killing girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on the night before Valentine’s Day in 2013.

Pistorius was sentenced to six years in prison.

Reeva Steenkamp’s family released a statement regarding the film.

“June Steenkamp had no knowledge of the making of the film Oscar Pistorius: Blade Runner Killer. She was not approached by [Lifetime] to participate, comment or be part of the making thereof. Any impression that is created that this is her view or endorsed by the Steenkamp family, is factually incorrect,” the statement read.

According to Channel24, the Pistorius family was also not consulted about the film. “The title sounds like the movie was made with a bias to the producers,”  Pistorius’s brother, Charl, said.

The Pistorius family has distanced itself from the movie, saying they were not involved in the making of the film and that it was made with “blatant disregard for both the Steenkamp and Pistorius families, as well as  a complete disregard for Reeva and Oscar”.

The family further noted the film is a gross distortion of the findings of the court.

Both the Steenkamp and Pistorius families said they will be taking legal action against the makers of the film.
