Hair is integral to a woman’s identity. It impacts how we see ourselves and our portrayal in the world. It can make or break our confidence. The natural hair movement has been growing, with many of us embracing the hair we’re born with.

The Johannesburg Natural Hair Expo is back with an even bigger edition after a successful launch in 2017. This year’s festival will host a range of African and international haircare brands.

Five dynamic young women who are passionate about empowering their peers and celebrating African heritage founded this expo. Their aim is to grow it and give opportunities to African male and female entrepreneurs who produce natural haircare products.

The organisers believe the journey of empowerment begins when women and girls understand and fall in love with who they are.

This year’s theme is “Hair-itage” – the expo is on Heritage Day, 24 September, a day when South Africans celebrate their cultural traditions. Attendees are encouraged to celebrate their diversity on the day with their choice of outfits.

The expo will include:

  • Natural haircare brands,
  • A kids’ corner,
  • Music and poetry,
  • Fashion and art, and;
  • Food stalls.

Creative Director Itumeleng Mogatusi says: “We believe in natural beauty. To us, natural beauty is being clear on who you are and falling in love with that person. We pursue natural beauty by embracing and loving our natural hair.”

“We believe our natural hair is a beautiful crown that makes us feel gorgeous, confident, sexy, unfiltered and most importantly, authentic,” she adds. “We do not cover our crowns, but we take care of them and wear them with pride.”
