Known for his role as Leeto Maputla on SABC1’s local drama series, Skeem Saam, Macheru shares the latest developments in his media and film career.

Without revealing all the details, the former Ajax Cape Town player says he is currently establishing a charitable foundation.

The 32-year-old Limpopo-born star was recently announced as the newest brand ambassador of the Samson clothing line.

Macheru says he made a big break as a professional soccer player after winning the SABC1 competition series, Soccer Kings, and eventually played for Ajax Cape Town.

His soccer career fell apart after he picked up a serious injury.

He recalls that moving into the entertainment industry and securing gigs wasn’t easy.

Macheru, who studied film at AFDA, says his first TV assignment was with Pop Bottles TV alongside the likes of DJ Dimplez and Thapelo Mokoena. “I got my break with soccer, but it’s been challenging breaking into the entertainment industry. Hard work always pays off,” he says.

Determined not to give up, Macheru says his only stumbling block is the people who don’t believe in him. “Believe in yourself and work hard – anything is possible,” he says.

Macheru says he could easily relate to the character he portrays on Skeem Saam.

“Leeto is a very complex character, but what I love about him is his love for family. Notice how he is in most storylines? It’s simply because of his love for people,” he says.

The TV star says his role as Samson ambassador is “crazy”.

“I’m still trying to comprehend it. I actually asked the Samson team if they’re sure about me being their ambassador. Being the ambassador means being able to show my laid-back style. It’s a distinctly South African brand, which I am proud to be a part of,” he says.

He says he has fond memories of Samson because his uncles wore the brand apparel when he was growing up.
