The biggest stars in television gathered for the 70th Primetime Emmy Awards held at the Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles on Monday night and they came ready to shine.

Opting to buck the trend of flowing, ballgown-style dresses, Black-ish actress Jenifer Lewis  took the opportunity to make a socio-political statement by wearing a bedazzled Nike sweater in protest.

“I am wearing Nike to applaud them for supporting Colin Kaepernick and his protest against racial injustice and police brutality,” she said in a red carpet interview with Variety.

Explaining her thought process, she said she asked herself what contribution she could make and so she decided to wear Nike.

“I’ll wear Nike to say thank you. Thank you for leading the resistance. We need other corporates to stand up also,” she said, while thanking Kaepernick for his bravery and courage.
