Let’s be honest. Unless you’re a teenager, you don’t want to look older than you really are, right?

You could unwittingly be ageing yourself prematurely with your makeup routine. Avoid these four make-up mistakes:

1. You’re wearing the wrong shade of foundation

If you are using a foundation that is, for instance, too light for your skin tone, you will instantly looked washed out and grey.

“Try a foundation with a warmer tone or simply go for a shade that’s one hue lighter than your original foundation. This will give you a much needed gorgeous glow,” says Hannon Bothma, co-founder of cosmetics brand Hannon.

Tip: To ensure that you’re using the right shade of foundation, test it on the side of your cheek to make sure it matches.

2. Applying lip liner incorrectly

To prevent your lips from “bleeding” (this happens when lipstick goes beyond the lip line) and enable your lipstick to last longer, you should be using a lip liner.

Make sure that the colour of lip liner you use is close to the shade of lipstick you’ll be using.

Tip: Your natural lip line is your marker. Don’t go too far outside of it.

3. Too much eyeshadow

Eyeshadow is a great way to draw attention to your eyes, but eyeshadow overload is not the look you should be going for.

“Too much eyeshadow or the wrong colour and finish can make your eyes look heavy. Steer clear from too much shimmer, as this will highlight the fine lines in the lids,” Hannon advises.

Tip: Rather use soft browns and neutrals instead of grey and black tones.

4. Overdone eyebrows

Have you over-plucked your eyebrows and now need to fill them in manually?

Be careful not to overdo your eyebrows because as it turns out, you could very well be making yourself look much older.

“If you have light and fine brows, it can be tempting to use a heavy hand with your brow pencil, but unblended brows can make you look way older than you might realise,” Hannon says.

Tip: Keep it natural by blending and only filling in your eyebrows where there is missing hair.
