The songstress and now actress Dana will be part of a new film called Joko Ya Hao.
The movie forms part of the Being Mandela series, which sees three 30-minute films put together in celebration of the late former President’s life.
Dana plays Nozizwe, a character said to have been modelled after Nelson Mandela’s former wife Winnie Madikizela-Mandela.
“As a village girl coming to the big city for career opportunities and to influence the political landscape. I could relate to my character. This is my sophomore role and it’s been incredible to journey back into this art form,” Dana said of the role in an interview with Channel24.
She was directed by multi-talented actress, producer, director and artist Mmabatho Montsho.
“It’s inspired by the legacy of Winnie Mandela. It’s a completely fictional story, which I set in a church to sort of explore the role of human leadership in a church. The lead is breathtakingly played by Simphiwe Dana as a woman in the 1960s who wants to become a priest. She’s brilliant. We set it in a time of forced removals and it explores the role of the church during political strive,” Montsho told SowetanLive.
The movie will be screened this week in Meyerton and also stars legendary actor Jet Novuka, who’s featured in Yizo Yizo, Zone 14, The River, Jacob’s Cross and Isidingo.
