It wasn’t until her mid-20s that Matiwana decided to ditch business school to tap into her storytelling abilities, breaking into the industry for the first time in 2005.

Her path, she says, has been bumpy. As a black woman in a white male-dominated space which is also notoriously cliquey, Matiwana’s had to deal with being overlooked and undermined. For a long time, she experienced considerable difficulty finding work – a period she describes as the lowest point in her career.
