While Franschhoek is known for its wine farms and old-style architecture, it can now add that it’s home to the most romantic hotel in Africa to its resume.

This year’s Boutique Hotel Awards named Akademie Street (yes, that’s the name of the hotel) as the world’s Most Romantic Retreat.

According to the Boutique Hotel Awards website, the hotel has nine-themed suites, seven wood-burning hot tubs and four heated pools.

“We love, Akademie’s characterful buildings, the carefully curated original furniture and collectables by world famous designers, the sumptuous breakfast (made using locally sourced food), the vintage bicycles, the seclusion of a private swimming pool and wood-burning hot tub and the evening piano recitals during cocktail and wine hour,” they say.

Other characteristics that secured the hotel the coveted award are its individual style (which apparently it has in spades) and its “unapologetic excess”, as well as world-class facilities.
