ESET South Africa CEO Carey van Vlaanderen shares a few tips for ensuring your online safety this Black Friday.

  • Use a safe connection – not every Internet connection is secure enough to be used for online payments so make sure that the website you’re on is indeed secure before you enter any card details. Don’t make use of free public wi0fi to make these purchases.
  • Be wary of fake deals – fake deal delivered to your inbox is very prevalent at this time of the year and are used to lure victims onto fake websites that harvest sensitive information like credit card numbers and login credentials.
  • Always check the URL – don’t let your guard down even when you see a well-known brand. Fraudsters can create fake websites that look almost identical to their original counterparts, so keep a watchful eye on the URL. Fake sites are easily identifiable as they use different internet addresses than the official pages they are trying to mimic.
  • Use credit or secure payment services only – making a purchase online is safer with a credit card or secure online payment service as this doesn’t involve any of the money you keep in your checking or savings account.
